Team S&J Tackle Sheffield Half Marathon in Aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity

Sheffield Half Marathon BannerEmployees from around the Spear & Jackson Group are warming up to take on the gruelling Sheffield Half Marathon, raising money for its chosen charity, The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Taking place on the 29th September 2021, the S&J superstars will take to the streets of the Steel City in support of the worthy cause.

Bowers Group is part of the world-renowned Spear & Jackson Group. With a 250 year history, it has become a multi-national organization with divisions covering garden tools, metrology equipment, woodworking tools and magnetic equipment.

Building a Better Future

The Children's Hospital Charity raises money to build a better future for children who visit Sheffield Children's Hospital. Each year over 245,000 patient visits are made to Sheffield Children's Hospital from across South Yorkshire, the UK and the world. This includes the 200 children a day who visit the Emergency Department, the 90 patients a year who are treated on the Cancer and Leukaemia Ward, as well as the Major Trauma patients who arrive via helicopter when every second counts.

Through your donations, the charity is able to invest in life-saving equipment, fund vital research, as well as creating a comfortable, engaging environment for its patients and visitors.

Meet the Runners

Katie Weller, Head of HR for the Spear and Jackson Group said: "I last ran an organised race 2019!  Since then, running has taken a back burner, with all things Pandemic, working in HR and home-schooling twins, well there hasn’t been a lot of free time!  Not as fit as I was, but excited to be getting back out there and raising funds for a fantastic cause which I hope we can make a difference for. Slightly (very) scared of the hills ahead, but running as part of this ‘Dream Team’, for such a worthy cause, I know this hilly journey will be worth it!"

S&J's newest recruit, HR Advisor, Lauren Saltfleet, told us: "This will be my third half marathon, but it’s been a few years since the last time I ran one! Saying that I tend to spend most of my spare time doing various types of fitness and I’ve racked up a fair few miles of running this year so I’m weirdly looking forward to the challenge. I’ve heard the hills are tough and I know it’s going to be hard work, but I am proud to be raising money for such an amazing cause with the S&J team!"

Tim Hollingsworth, General Sales Manager at Bowers Group's sister company, Eclipse Magnetics, said: "I’ve been a regular gym-goer for the best part of 35 years, getting into running when I ran the 2019 Sheffield 10k for St Luke’s with Team S&J, this was the furthest organised run I had done since leaving school and I haven’t looked back! Pandemic, home working and lockdowns actually helped, with gyms closed I ran out outside a lot!  I’ve never done an organised half Marathon before so looking forward to the challenge (but not those Sheffield hills!!)  and to raising as much money as possible for a very worthy cause!"

S&J UK Online Sales Manager, Matt Williams, is preparing for two huge races: "I got into running at the start of the first lockdown. I’ve been running lots recently as I am also training for the Manchester Marathon which is exactly 2 weeks after the Sheffield Half!" He explained. "It’s great to raise money for the charities I am supporting, Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital with work and The Stroke Association (personal).  Ready for the challenge and making a difference!"

Speaking of the challenge ahead, Scott said: “During my degree at Sheffield Hallam, I was an active member of the swimming team, this naturally led to an interest in triathlons. During the pandemic, the pools were closed so I focused more on the bike and run elements of the sport. On the run, I have slowly increased my distances to ones I never thought I'd be able to achieve. This led to me thinking of putting my efforts into a challenge for myself and to help others whilst raising money for a great cause.”

A 'Triple Test'

With a city centre start and finish, the half marathon course, notorious for challenging hill climbs, boasts a stunningly scenic route with majestic views of the Peak District on the climb to Ringinglow.

But with stunning views comes a formidable challenge. The race incorporates a 'triple test', giving entrants a chance to be crowned Peaks Challenge winners in a timed hill climb, triumph in a times 10K downhill sprint section and cross the finish line first to lift the Sheffield Half Marathon title.
